Swedish Covenant Hospital Selected by HIMSS to Host Health I.T. Tour

With all the recent buzz surrounding The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), it's exciting to see HIMSS offer members of the press the chance to see technology in "meaningful use" at Swedish Covenant Hospital (Chicago, IL). As MEDITECH's first MAGIC customer to achieve the prestigious Stage 6 Electronic Medical Record recognition, Swedish Covenant is one of three health care facilities selected by HIMSS to host a health I.T. tour for reporters during the 2009 HIMSS Conference, which is being held in Chicago this month.

This event will provide several area journalists with an overview of the hospital's EMR adoption strategies, and will include visits to various hospital departments—showing the benefits of health I.T. for both staff and patients. Karen Sheehan, chief information officer, believes that her organization can serve as a model for hospitals just beginning the health I.T. adoption process.

"The challenging path to achieving Stage 6 required a tremendous amount of buy-in and support from all levels of hospital staff, including senior management and physicians on the front lines of patient care," she says. "We're proud of the way we have been able to improve patient safety and quality of care, while at the same time providing invaluable support to our clinicians and enhancing our operational efficiencies."

"Swedish Covenant has had great success with MEDITECH's on-line physician documentation as part of their CPOE rollout," she says. "They have set an excellent example for our other customers."
