Stage 6 Customer: Howard County General Hospital
Clinicians at Howard County agree that advanced MEDITECH
technologies helped them to streamline processes and keep care safer
for patients.
Howard
County General Hospital (Columbia, MD), a member of Johns Hopkins
Medicine, is among MEDITECH's growing list of customers who have
achieved Stage 6 Electronic Medical Record Adoption recognition from
HIMSS Analytics. The hospital is now nearly 80% paperless, a key
factor in their success.
Howard County cardiologist Michael Silverman, MD, reports that
working electronically has really grown on the clinicians at his
facility. Since physicians are now entering 70% of their orders into
the system, the health care organization has seen a dramatic
reduction in the number of communication errors due to illegible
handwritten orders.
"Our doctors recognize the system's benefits in improving
patient care and safety, and have fully embraced it," Silverman
says. "They appreciate how orders are transmitted in a timely
manner and other caregivers can quickly access this patient
information from anywhere in the hospital, via computer."
In addition, nurses and other Howard County clinicians who
administer medications are also ensuring patient safety at the
point-of-care, by scanning medication orders into the system—thus
making sure the right patient is getting the right medication, in
the right dosage, at the right time.
