The Nursing Shortage

As health care organizations contend with clinical staff shortages, nurses are expected to treat an increasing number of higher acuity patients efficiently, all while maintaining the highest safety standards. MEDITECH's advanced clinical system provides leading edge information technology to streamline nurse workloads and incorporate the clinical decision support tools that ensure safety, creating a quality environment for patients.

Nurses utilizing our system have the information they need to prioritize tasks, plan shifts, and improve patient care. A Nursing Status Board feature within our Patient Care System application accommodates the expanding workloads and growing challenges of today's nurses by providing them with a clear overview of which patients require care, the interventions that are needed, and the timeframes associated with those interventions. The Nursing Status Board displays the patients for an individual caregiver or a specific location, and enables nurses to manage all aspects of their patients' care such as medication administration and documentation from a single screen. It serves as the nurses' "home page," making the workflow process more efficient and helping nurses to organize and prioritize their workloads.

Since releasing our Nursing Status Board, MEDITECH has received wonderful feedback from our end-users. We recently heard from Joyce Walls, associate director of clinical informatics at Mount Nittany Medical Center (State College, PA) who had this to say: "The nurses have had a really positive response to this new feature, because they realize that it enhances their ability to manage care for a group of patients, all from a single location. Nurses can now prioritize care based on a patient's needs. Furthermore, our nurses really like being able to decide ‘on the fly’ whether to go into an intervention and document via the spreadsheet."

Nurses on the front line of patient care require decision support tools that meet their specific needs. Our clinical decision support tools enable nurses to administer medications safely and efficiently through point-of-care technology. MEDITECH incorporates bar code scanning technology in our on-line Medication Administration Record, enabling nurses to check the "Five Rights" (right patient, right drug, right dose, right route, and right time) upon scanning the patient's wristband and medication.

MEDITECH recognizes the urgency within health care to rise above the nursing shortage and in response, we will continue to develop advanced clinical tools that allow care givers to make the most of their valuable time.
