Medisolv in Final Stages of Becoming Approved Oryx Vendor

Today, a significant number of MEDITECH customers take advantage of our relationship with Medisolv to compile and analyze quality metrics, such as core measures and key performance indicators (KPI's). In the coming months, as Medisolv becomes an approved Oryx vendor, customers can look forward to using Medisolv as their single solution for data extraction, abstraction, and submission of core measure data sets to both CMS and The Joint Commission.

According to The Joint Commission Web site, to become an Oryx-approved performance measurement system, a solution must be composed of:

  • a set of process and/or outcome measures of performance
  • processes for collecting, analyzing, and disseminating these measures from multiple organizations; and
  • an automated database.

that, together, can be used to facilitate performance improvement in health care organizations.

"The entire multi-stage process began last February and takes anywhere from eight to nine months to completion," explains Dr. Zahid Butt, CEO of Medisolv. "We are currently in the final stages and anticipate final approval sometime in the fourth quarter of 2009." If all goes according to plan, Dr. Butt anticipates some customers will be using Medisolv to submit their Q1, 2010 abstracts to The Joint Commission. "Customers are very eager to use these products; in fact, we are getting calls regularly inquiring on the status," he adds.

Medisolv currently supports the six inpatient core measure sets and three outpatient sets, including the children's asthma measure sets required of all children's hospitals.

The capability to abstract and submit core measures to The Joint Commission will be included in Medisolv's ENCOR product. There is no separate license fee for those customers who have already licensed the IndiGo product for KPI dashboards — only an implementation and quarterly service fee for core measure data submission.

Advantages of Using Medisolv
There are several advantages to using Medisolv's ENCOR solution, including improved automation and a more seamless workflow.

One of the primary benefits of ENCOR is its support for concurrent processes. "Abstractors do not have to wait for the month or quarter to end to begin the abstracting process, as is the case with other systems," explains Dr. Butt. "You can start the abstraction as soon as records are final coded and spread the work evenly throughout the month and quarter. Abstractors can come in every morning and see how many cases they have in their measure sets."

Another benefit of ENCOR is its integration with the MEDITECH Data Repository and Medisolv's IndiGo product. "More clinical data is pulled from our system and is automatically populated into the abstraction worksheets" states Dr. Butt. "Users can drill down into ENCOR to view additional patient detail without having to go back to the chart to search for it. Additional information can be found next to the question a user is answering, resulting in more automated processes." Data submitted from ENCOR is also available in IndiGo Dashboards for goal tracking.

Finally, ENCOR will streamline the entire process for submitting core measures to CMS and The Joint Commission, as the software automatically generates all the necessary submission files for you.

How Do I Get There
Training for Medisolv is easy, as the products are very intuitive, helping customers get up and running quickly. Those customers actively using and maintaining the MEDITECH Data Repository can anticipate an implementation timeframe of four to six weeks.

"Customers looking to transition to Medisolv should start familiarizing themselves now with what is available," states Dr. Butt. "This includes evaluating the terms of your existing contracts and determining when the appropriate time would be to transition to Medisolv."

Looking Ahead
Oryx approval is not the only thing on Medisolv's plate these days. They are also in the process of releasing ARRA dashboards, which consist of a combination of automated and manual data fields designed to track compliance with meaningful use criteria.
