How to Succeed in Business
(1/19/2012)
Two health authorities share the benefits of MEDITECHs 6.1 business platform.
An aging patient population. A shrinking healthcare workforce. The untapped potential of technology. These are the shared concerns that brought the Northern and Interior health authorities together last year, to explore options for consolidating their I.T. systems and resources, as mandated by the government.
Today, they share a single MEDITECH's 6.1 business platform--enabling each to benefit from increased system functionality, at a substantially lower cost.
The Northern and Interior health authorities are now using one supply chain management database with multiple purchasing facilities, allowing them to leverage costs across the vast province. This business system consolidation has also created the largest payroll system running on the MEDITECH solution, with more than 28,000 active employees between the two authorities.
Health Authority Leaders Sing the Praises of Partnership
Interior and Northern have been working together for quite some time, focusing on standardizing processes and information," says Northern Health Authority CIO Jeff Hunter. "We're leveraging our collective experience to create efficiencies and savings for everyone. And MEDITECH has been a key partner in helping us to make our back office processes a success.
"We run one payroll system, which handles payrolls for both organizations," Hunter continues. "We also have separate business units for both our numerous acute hospitals and our non-acute facilities, and share both the billing software and dictionaries."
Mal Griffin, CIO at Interior Health Authority, agrees that this partnership is helping caregivers in British Columbia to keep up with the needs of patients, as well as the provincial government. "In the coming years, we will all be expected to provide more services with fewer health care workers," he stresses.
"By relying on cost-effective technologies to help us address these challenges, we can all invest more in our direct care efforts, where our resources are needed most."
