Nurses Take a Leading Role During 5th Annual CNE Symposium
(12/9/2008)
Health care is becoming one of the most regulated industries in the nation, and no wonder: with chronic diseases on the rise and patients demanding faster, more convenient care delivery, there is more information to manage than ever before. While medical conditions and technologies grow ever more complex, the central focus for nurses still remainsgiving patients the safest, most timely care possible.
But how can nurses find the right tools to address today's myriad of health care challenges, so they can spend the majority of their time at the patient's bedside? One of the keys is effective nurse leadership, and at MEDITECH's recent Chief Nursing Executive (CNE) Symposium, attendees discussed how having their voices heard at the decision-making table can help their staffs to make a smoother transition to new information technologies, while boosting morale by giving them more recognition for the essential work they do.
The challenges of keeping nursing staff proactive and engaged in their field was explored by the event's Keynote Speaker, Dr. Jo Manion. A nationally recognized lecturer, author, and senior management consultant, Manion offered her perspective on why maintaining a positive workplace is essential for hospitals to attract and retain quality nurses, in order to avoid the high clinical and financial costs of staff turnover. She believes that I.T. should be a major component in any facility's strategy to improving the work environment, as well as maximizing nursing performance.
Attendees also heard from a variety of customer speakers, who shared their experiences on such topics as implementing teleheath strategies, and improving software deployment with strong nursing leadership. In addition, MEDITECH staff spoke on the latest developments with MEDITECH's product line, including efforts to push more information out to the caregivers who need itthrough evidence-based order sets, automated system reminders, and alerts.
