MEDITECH Prepares Customers for ANSI 5010 Requirements

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) recently adopted ANSI version 5010 to replace the 4010 standard health care providers must use when conducting electronic transactions. MEDITECH is in the final stages of developing our ANSI 5010 software and is planning delivery to our customers.

The 5010 update to the Home Care product will contain:

  • 837 Institutional
  • 837 Professional
  • 835 Remittance
  • 999 Implementation Acknowledgment in Readable Format
  • 277 Claim Acknowledgment in Readable Format
  • Process Claim Acknowledgment task enhancements to handle the processing of the 999 (not applicable for legacy inSync system)

MEDITECH will be developing testing guides to assist in implementing the functionality above, which will be available at time of delivery. These guides will be published on the Home Care Resource Page.

As found on CMS.gov, timelines for implementation are noted below.

For all covered entities:

  • Effective Date of the regulation: March 17, 2009
  • Level I* compliance to begin by: December 31, 2010
  • Level II** Compliance by: December 31, 2011
  • All covered entities have to be fully compliant on: January 1, 2012

*Level I compliance means, "that a covered entity can demonstrably create and receive compliant transactions, resulting from the compliance of all design/build activities and internal testing." We expect covered entities to be testing throughout calendar year 2011, and to schedule testing as early as possible to ensure sufficient time for corrective actions and re-testing.

**Level II compliance means, "that a covered entity has completed end-to-end testing with each of its trading partners, and is able to operate in production mode with the new versions of the standards."

Other additional important dates to keep in mind:

  • MACs will not accept production 5010 claims until 4/5/2011 at the earliest (the actual date will depend upon your MAC).
  • CMS strongly suggests that providers begin submitting 5010 test claims before October 2011, to help ensure that you meet the 1/1/2012 deadline.
  • Please ensure that you contact all of your payers so that you know when they will begin accepting 5010 submissions and when 5010 submissions will be mandatory.

Additional details will be posted to this portal as they become available.
