Health care organizations from Massachusetts, Maryland, Rhode Island, and New York are among the latest facilities to be recognized for EMR adoption.
Congratulations to the following MEDITECH customers, who recently received Stage 6 EMR Adoption Recognition status from HIMSS Analytics. Each organization has its own story to tell on what it means to have attained a very high level of I.T. adoption, so look for more in-depth articles in the months ahead!
In the meantime, please join us in congratulating these facilities and their teams on their Stage 6 successes.
Roger Williams Medical Center (Providence, RI)
Roger Williams is unique in that the organization piloted its psychiatric unit for its final step in achieving Stage 6. The facility is a full-service medical/surgical/psychiatric teaching hospital that has been using MEDITECH's BV, CPOE, and PACS for years. But only last year did Roger Williams begin the process of implementing structured provider documentation.
“As most everyone is aware, it's not simply demonstrating that structured documentation is in place, but demonstrating how that structured data triggers real time clinical guidance,” says CIO Susan Cerrone, who explains that on a psychiatric unit, the 'clinical guidance' process is very different than on a med/surg unit.
“Our physicians were very clearly able to demonstrate the clinical guidelines we have in place, which also proved to be an enlightening moment for our HIMSS validation team,” she says.“While we know that our efforts in I.T. are always focused on the improvement in patient care, Stage 6 recognition is a nice re-affirmation that we're actually accomplishing this."
United Memorial Medical Center (Batavia, NY)
Located in upstate New York, this hospital went from HIMSS Analytics Stage 3 to Stage 6 within a year's time, and continues to grow its physician documentation capabilities within its speciality units.
"Our hospitalists are using CPOE and we have 100% electronic ordering in the ER," says CIO Kurt Calman. "Our facility also participates heavily in two local regional health information organizations (RHIOs). We're not just tracking data for reporting purposes. Our aim is providing useable information in real-time and enabling our clinicians to develop higher levels of patient care."
Harrington Hospital (Southbridge, MA)
This small, western-Massachusetts hospital has come a long way in 5 years. "We were technologically challenged prior to installing MEDITECH in 2006," says CIO Hadley Zabinski. "But, thanks to our strong leadership and nimble implementation teams—made up of both clinicians and I.T. staff—we're now on the cutting edge of health care technology and out in front of even some of the bigger academic hospitals."
The organization's tech-savvy teams are now looking down the road and setting their sights on Stage 7.
Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital (Baltimore, MD)
This pediatric hospital is one of the foremost users of MEDITECH's Advanced Clinical Systems, ordering 100% of medications 100% online. Located in the city of Baltimore, this 102-bed teaching hospital is also affiliated with both Johns Hopkins and the University of Maryland.
Mt. Washington focuses on rehabilitation, treating a vast range of challenging pediatric conditions. "Our goal has always been the creation of the electronic chart, and using that to improve patient safety," says I.S. Director Tim Brady. "We built a strong I.T. foundation which allowed us to reach Stage 6, and now we're well poised for the next steps on our EHR journey."
