Meaningful
Use Review In Progress (1/12/10)
MEDITECH
is reviewing the new definition of Meaningful Use
and the associated Interim Final Rule for
Meaningful Use standards, implementation
specifications, and certification criteria. Our
initial reading shows no real surprises, but
there are some new requirements outlined in the
documents. These include: clearer definitions for
eligible hospitals and providers, a 90 day live
period for 10% utilization of CPOE, the
rescheduling of order sets from 2013 to 2011,
five clinical decision support rules in 2011
instead of one, specified vocabularies and
interoperability protocols, as well as extended
outcome reporting measures and self-attestation
statements of Meaningful Use measurement criteria
just to highlight a few. more

Update: Government Releases Proposed Regulations
on Definition of Meaningful Use (12/31/09)
The Centers for
Medicare and Medicaid Services and the Office of
the National Coordinator has issued a Notice of Proposed
Rulemaking (NPRM) on the definition of Meaningful
Use and an Interim Final Rule (IFR) on an initial
set of standards, implementation specifications,
and certification criteria. MEDITECH has posted
two of the newly released documents: Medicare
and Medicaid Programs; Electronic Health Record
Incentive Program and Initial
Set of Standards, Implementation Specifications,
and Certification Criteria for Electronic Health
Record Technology.
MEDITECH will
review this new documentation and will make
necessary adjustments to our existing materials
in the days and weeks ahead. However, as David
Blumenthal noted on the Federal Advisory Blog,
"the next steps begin with you." The
public is being heavily encouraged to provide
input on the draft Meaningful Use definition and
standards and certification criteria. You can
formally submit your comments here.
